And the points you make strongly resonate with me and the way I approach life. Why? In the late 1990's the band did a series of club dates. But the station wasn't upset by that, but because when the band came to town, they were unable to give the Christian station an interview, because of the contract with the radio station who sponsored the show. But the station manager was incensed (as he is sometimes wont to do) that they wouldn't violate their contract and give the Christian station an interview as well. I've been mentor...Hi, thanks for posting this.

I've been mentoring artists for 12 years, in the UK. In such debates and articles it is strange how artists can be seen as the problem and not the Church!

"But if they feel there’s no relevance between and their faith and their vocation as a writer, musician, or filmmaker to name a few then we are missing the best opportunity we have to fulfill the Great Commission, build the Kingdom of God, and be a witness for Christ. What a tragedy!"

Is this suggesting that the Great Commission can only be fulfilled by the artist if they stay in the Church (whatever that means!)

Part of the problem is a Church geared to see growth as a numeric value, that we don't need to develop calling and vocation, just get the bums on the seats in our churches. This was not the Way for Jesus.

To see an artist who is a christian to see their work's only relevance as part of a church programme is so debilitating, so restrictive, that of course their is a response to escape such strictures.

Another problem is the gap between the language used in churches and by their artists and that used outside of the Church institution. As a writer and film-maker I couldn't make films or write books for the mainstream using that kind of language. It doe not translate. Jesus however used the language of the people and not the Scribes and Pharisees, he told stories and didn't use moral outrage when encountering different cultures or beliefs - he was comfortable in His own story! His stories created empathy for the human condition, they gave people the space to think without following a prescription.

The art which is expected by the Church is at odds with the freedom we are supposed to encounter when we meet with the Spirit. The Church historically has a bad history with this kind of control, whether in the Renaissance or now with so-called contemporary christian art today. Things were better at the time of the Reformation, when artist were free to paint the world outside of the church, or heavenly domains! Since that time, our cultural influence has waned as the pietistic notion of faith has contracted our worldview.

Christians who are artists are worldly and sensual (allegedly) if they don't work for and in the church (programme). However, its's time for the salt to leave the cellar, the yeast to be added to the dough and the light to emerge from beneath the proverbial bushel.

Peace,
Geoff Hall, Bristol UK.
http://mynameissorrow.smugmug.com/Movies
http://upptacka.com/shopAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6941003003699580996.post-36208792818352016482012-07-14T17:10:29.533-04:002012-07-14T17:10:29.533-04:00Yes, I have been writing a book about growing up ...Yes, I have been writing a book about growing up in 1950's New Jersey with unconverted relatives and some Christian publishers...and other writers... have taken exception to the word "shit" which is uttered by my live-in uncle in the book. Am I to say that "Unk is crude and vulgar" instead of portraying at least some of that vulgarity? Frankly, I am more interested in general audiences reading and being challenged by the book...and they don't shop in Christian bookstores. So it's essentially two films in one, each with a separate title, with one version for the faith-based audience and another for the secular domestic & foreign markets. The two-in-one strategy was also one of the main attractions for the New York-based hedge fund now giving the film serious consideration, because it offered them less risk and more potential for profit.Erikhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04746423394035786344noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6941003003699580996.post-61508477526000147492012-04-28T03:13:26.374-04:002012-04-28T03:13:26.374-04:00your site is very nice.......

I think it brings up th...This is a great blog post! I think it brings up the thing many creative types and businesses struggle with—do you create things to inspire and change the world, or to make money? Obviously we'd all like to do both. I recently finished my first novel (I'm a professional ghostwriter who mostly writes mainstream business pieces, but the book is heavily christian referenced) and although I have one of the top agents in the business, she doesn't know where to sell it. Christian publishers don't want it because it's not traditional and mainstream publishers think it's "too Christian." So you do what the Kendricks did. You find an audience that likes what you produce and you keep them happy.

The push comes from those who believe, as my agent and others have said, that if we dilute or "tone down" the message we'll be accepted in the mainstream venues more. But what about Christ's admonition to "Be in the world, but not of it?" I think we assume a lot when we believe that "All christians" have the same level of faith and commitment of, say, a pastor. There are many people who have gone to church for decades and NEVER understood the message of the gospel. These movies and books touch them deeply. There is a place for what we're doing and I don't think the message has to be soft-pedaled, obscured or changed to make it "acceptable." I think the boldness of speaking and portraying REAL Christians with real struggles is a greater ministry than we realize.JustSayinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06324479677632011718noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6941003003699580996.post-17435864877015422782012-02-22T02:53:44.354-05:002012-02-22T02:53:44.354-05:00Thank You !!Thank You !!Harold Hayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15341323691773240613noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6941003003699580996.post-77761740706345019072012-02-18T12:32:41.884-05:002012-02-18T12:32:41.884-05:00I love the Waltons! I also resonated with John Boy's aspirations to be a writer. And, I agree, it also set me on a path to seek spiritual truth- even though I had received Christ into my life as a teenager. By the time I was watching the reruns, I had walked away completely disillusioned with Christianity.
